as we wander » traveling adventures of monika and jonathan

We made a really quick stop in Southern California to say hi to some friends and family before heading east. It was a bittersweet, as this was our “last” trip to California while on this adventure. I guess these last few meetings were making the end all feel very real. We’ve had so much flexibility to come and go as we please for the last two years it’s hard to imagine that we’re actually closing those doors for a little while. But don’t you worry, we’ve become “wanderers” at heart. 🙂

There is just something great about those friends you know you’ll have forever and ever. Oh how we love these guys too!

Ok. This day may have been my favorite day of our whole trip. I mean, don’t get be wrong, I loved Hawaii, and I LOVED Alaska, but there was something magical about the coast this day. The colors were unreal. It was almost like I had never realized how beautiful California is! We started the trip in Salinas, CA and took our time driving south. We jammed to fun music in the car. We stopped and watched some divers coming out of the water, only to see a few whales blowing in the background (!!!). I’m so thankful for moments like these, I can’t even tell you. As the sun started to dip down, we were nearing Malibu. There aren’t too many places to stop along this part of the road, so we pulled over just in time to watch the sun set behind the water. Pure magic! I will never, ever, forget this day. God’s beauty was just shining through the ocean that day. And there was something special about taking the time to slow down and just drive for hours and hours. Heh, I guess it felt a little bit like home after living in our Little House.

What are old friends for, right? Love these guys. We had so much fun running around town, playing tennis, actually running, grabbing sweet deals at thrift stores, playing penny poker late into the night, making scrumptious meals, playing truth or dare, drinking hot tea and more. It was a wonderful send off on our journey. Thanks for a fun few days! We miss you guys!

October 1, 2013

We planned our leave date in sync with Rio Lindo Adventist Academy’s break. This way, we could spend a few last days with our friends (who teach there) before heading south. On our way to the Napa Valley for a few days of fun, Jonathan and I stopped at the world’s largest corn maze! It was ridiculously hot, but we had a blast running around the fields. Apparently Jonathan is better at following directions than I am … but we probably knew that already. 😉

We had some friends who went at night and got completely lost! It took them over 2 hours to get out of there. Heh. When we went, I think there were two other families in the maze and we were in and out in less than an hour. Now I’d like to go back and try it at night. I’m sure it would be a completely different experience! This was my first time in a corn maze so I was pretty excited.

The last few days of September 2013

Jonathan finished his travel assignment in Yuba City at the end of September. We sold all the furniture we bought for our apartment and somehow managed to once again pack everything into our blue VW Beetle + a roof box. I’m always amazed by this! I’ll share more about our trip south, then east, in the coming posts, but here are a few last images of our time in Yuba City + Sacramento.
